Surface Ornamentation Project

Kanda” (onions in Hindi) is a surface ornamentation project inspired by the rings, shape, colors, roots and layers of an onion.

The following is a collection of illustrations/motifs primarily created by hand on paper using watercolors, later developed into fabric samples using various techniques and finally replicated one of the samples onto a shirt as an end product.
This is one of the three samples created and it was developed by cutting three different shades of net fabric into different sizes of circles, layering and stitching them in place on the base fabric. Along with circles made using back-stitch.
This sample was created on a white net fabric. The two onion bulb shapes were filled up using different techniques of embroidery and bead work.
Last but not the least, in this sample, organza fabric was cut and finished into circles depicting the bulb shape of onion and run over by matching threads directly onto the base fabric. Whereas the leaves were made separately using the same technique before attaching them to the base fabric. For the roots, the brown thread was used and tacked to one end alone to show the fibrous texture.
This is the final product, on which one of the sample is executed. A dolman sleeve beige-colored, pure cotton shirt with onion-shaped motifs patched on the collar.
